Tanneries cannot measure each hide to a perfect square foot so they use a machine which is fairly accurate. The machine will stamp two numbers on the back of the hide. Usually the first number is larger and represents the full square footage. The second number is usually smaller and sometimes underlined. It represents the remaining percentage of a square foot in quarters. For example 6(1) would be 6 and one quarter square feet; 6(2) would be 6 and one half square feet and 6(3) would be 6 and three quarters square feet.

If you have the luxury of picking out your own pieces of leather, allow 5% more leather than the pattern calls for if using a high-qulaity leather, 10-15% for lower quality. This will allow you to work around odd-shaped pieces and avoid unacceptable flaws. When mail-ordering your leather, puchase 10% more leather than the pattern calls for when they say it is high-quality and 15-20% for lower quality. Better to be safe than sorry!
